Jim Anchower's Hard Rockin' CD Reviews - Guided By Voices

Guided By VoicesUniversal Truths And Cycles
I went over to Wes The Bomb's so that I could check out some web sites and get some ideas for mine. The first place he took me to was Cheap Trick's web site. As soon as it kicked in with Rick Nielsen saying "I want you to want me," from Live At Buddokan, I knew that that was what I wanted for my web site. Wes told me that I didn't have enough cash for that kind of layout or sound, and I was gonna have to make do. Wes is always telling me about what I can't do and not so much about what I can. That guy can really be a real bucket on the bonfire.

Anyway, on the Cheap Trick web site, there was a list of Bun E. Carlos' top-10 albums. I figured that I should probably get hip to some new music and hear what the bass master of the Trick was listening to for inspiration. Number three on his list was this band called Guided By Voices. That's some crazy shit. But I was totally willing to overlook that name, if Bun E. said they were good.

I was talking to Wes about it, and he said he saw the Guided By Voices CD in the window of one of the record stores downtown, so I figured that I should check it out. I went in there and, let me tell you, that's the last time I go to that store. I have never seen a bigger bunch of skinny, pasty motherfuckers in my life, and they were looking at me like I was the freak.

Well, I got the CD home, and I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. There were some good power chords, but then they sort of went away. I couldn't figure out what the hell they were singing about. I was pretty pissed for paying $13 for it. One of these days, I gotta get Wes to show me how to get money from the Internet. And, I'm gonna have to get my music information from somewhere else. I mean, shit, he's Bun E. Carlos, but I guess that don't always make him right.
